How a power of attorney signing works

Book and tell me about your witness

Pick a time and let me know whether you're bringing a witness or need me to arrange one. Please don't sign your document yet.

Everyone gets a secure link

You and your witness each receive your own session link by email from jessica@kitchentablenotary.com. Please check your spam folder if you don't see it.

Confirm your identity

You'll scan your photo ID and answer a few short identity questions, which Illinois requires. You'll need a Social Security number and a US credit history to complete them.

Sign, witness, and download

We review the document together. You sign, your witness signs, and I add my electronic seal. You can download the finished document right away.

What you'll need

Before your session, please have these ready:

  • Your power of attorney as a PDF, filled in and not yet signed

  • One eligible witness, or let me know you need one when you book

  • A current, unexpired government-issued photo ID

  • A computer, tablet, or phone with a camera and microphone, for you and for your witness

Who can be your witness

An Illinois power of attorney for property needs one witness in addition to the notary, and I can't serve as your witness myself. Your witness should be an adult, and to join through my platform they need to be a US citizen or resident. Under Illinois law, these people can't be your witness:

  • Your agent or successor agent

  • A parent, sibling, or child of you or of any agent, or the spouse of one of those relatives

  • Your attending doctor or mental health provider, or one of their relatives

  • An owner or operator of a care facility where you live or are a patient, or one of their relatives

If you don't have someone who fits, I can arrange a witness for your session
